The decommissioning of the Willmar Power Plant started in October 2022 with environmental remediation including asbestos and regulated waste removal. Work included demolition of entire power plant including boilers, turbine generators, four steel smoke stacks, two coal silos, cooling towers, heat exchange building, coal conveyors and all associated underground utilities and operating equipment at the site. Extensive planning & coordination with the Owner occurred due the construction of the substation directly adjacent to the power plant. Site restoration included the backfilling of the power plant basement, installation of bioswale and import & placement of topsoil and seed over the disturbed areas. Site restoration also included new sidewalk, driveway, curb and bituminous pavement around the site.
